Alberto Sciamma – Writer/Director
| Director's Statement
Alberto Sciamma (Barcelona, 1961) exploded out of Spain
to carve an innovative path in the tradition of Bunuel and
Almodovar. As a screenwriter, his screenplay KILLER TONGUE
won support from The European Script Fund. As a director,
he won the highly competitive Fuji Award for his short film “Balls
of Fire”, which generated considerable press acclaim.
He then started producing and directing music videos for
such artists as Nitzer Ebb, Diamanda Galas, Thomas Felman,
Rude Girl and Fisher Z, before joining Palace Pictures (producers
of “The Crying Game”) as a permanent promo director.
He has also directed music-based commercials for TV for clients
such as Coca-Cola (Summer 1990 Spanish campaign), as well
as directing for Channel Four in the UK.
His personal, distinctive style earned him one of the leading
positions in Spain as a video-director. He has worked with
such names as Heroes del Silencio, Alaska y Dinarama, Fangoria,
Gabinete Caligari and La Union, in London, Madrid and New
York.
The outrageous KILLER TONGUE, made with Spice Factory and
Lola Films, was his first feature as writer and director,
starring Robert Englund, Melinda Clarke and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.
It won BEST ACTRESS AWARD for Melinda Clarke at THE SITGES
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF FANTASTIC CINEMA 1996; it won BEST
SPECIAL EFFECTS for Image Animation at the FANTASPORTO FILM
FESTIVAL 1997; and BEST DIRECTOR for Alberto Sciamma at the
XVII FANTA FESTIVAL ROME 1997.
Alberto was then commissioned to write two screenplays for
Working Title Films. Last year he completed directing his
own screenplay ANAZAPTA, a medieval thriller in the vein
of the Pale Rider meets The Name Of The Rose, starring Jason
Fleming, Lena Headey and David Le Haye, produced and financed
by Spice Factory and currently being sold by Lightning Entertainment.
Also being developed with Spice Factory is DOG, FRY, and
CRUSH HOUR. He is also developing a $60M animated feature
for Universal Films entitled GON.
Alberto recently directed an original script he wrote with
Harriet Sand for Spice Factory entitled JERICHO MANSIONS,
starring James Caan, Jennifer Tilly, Maribel Verdú and
Geneviève Bujold.
