When my son David first told me about this production I was immediately hooked. I was delighted to be given the opportunity of being involved in a film that featured two major British subjects, namely James Herriot and the spectacular county of Yorkshire.

My interest was further advanced when, upon meeting David Nicholas Wilkinson and Chris Timothy, my wife, Sue and I were given the opportunity of playing a part in the production as executive producers.

As a veterinary surgeon I was able to identify with many of Herriot's exploits in my early days of practice and thus being involved with a film about this great man was indeed an honour and a thrill. Sue and I revisited many of the locations featured in the film, meeting up with some of the local characters and discovering parts of Yorkshire that had previously been unknown to us. Many times we were spellbound by the spleandour and beauty of the countryside. With almost every bend in the road a new vista would present itself. Sometimes bleak and sombre, sometimes dramatic and impressive and others of gentle woodlands bisected by ribbons of tumbling water.

As filming progressed we then entered the alien world of post production, especially the editing (of course done by our son David), distributing, marketing, advertising etc. This is where David Wilkinson and Chris Timothy came into their own. Chris's many finger-cramping hours spent signing copies of the video and David's tireless efforts on the phone and word processor in promoting, were impressive.

All their endeavours were rewarded when, in 31 October 1993, we had the world première of James Herriot's Yorkshire at a civic reception given by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, which was featured on Yorkshire TV. This was a fitting climax to what had been a wonderful experience to which both Sue and I were privileged to have played some small part.
