Central Scotland Documentary Festival to Host World Premiere of ‘1 IN 2’
Filmmaker and Stirling 900 Award for Achievement in Documentary recipient, David Nicholas Wilkinson, will return to the Central Scotland Documentary Festival this November for the world premiere of his latest film, 1 IN 2.
David's most personal film to date, 1 IN 2 follows his own experience of a stage 4 bowel cancer diagnosis while exploring the wider issues surrounding the disease, its symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
And, he hopes, it may just save a life.
The documentary also shines a light on the increasing number of younger people being diagnosed with bowel cancer, and the danger of symptoms being dismissed because of age. The film features a bowel surgeon who was herself diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer at just 44 and highlights the many ways the disease can present and the importance of understanding the potential symptoms.
But 1 IN 2 isn't simply a film about cancer and its treatment. David also sets out to demystify what happens after a diagnosis, showing how advances in cancer treatment have changed the experience for patients compared with previous generations.
There are, unsurprisingly, difficult moments, but there are also moments of humour and, above all, hope.
The film features Dame Laura Lee, Iain Macleod, Nicola McLean and Renee Shawcroft, with filming taking place in locations including Perth, Lanarkshire and Oban.
Maggie’s, the Scottish-founded cancer charity, also features in the film, with David choosing to donate all box office income from the screening to the charity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.
David Nicholas Wilkinson, Director of 1 IN 2, commented:
“1 IN 2 is my most personal film yet, dealing with my terminal cancer diagnosis, and because so many in the medical profession have said it will save lives, it is possibly my most important film. The only charity I filmed, because I think they’re the best, is Maggie’s, founded in Scotland 30 years ago, and I am honoured that they have agreed to be the recipient of the box office income from cinema screenings in their anniversary year.”

Not only that, but it is such a privilege that the money raised will be donated to Maggie’s – this is a wonderful display of kindness, and it will help us to provide more care to people who need us, particularly as the number of people with cancer continues to grow. I am particularly grateful for the work of David Wilkinson – he is not a bystander filmmaker – he knows first-hand the experience of living with cancer, and it is brilliant that he is willing to share that experience in such an impactful way.”
1 IN 2 will have its world premiere at Central Scotland Documentary Festival 2026, which takes place at Macrobert Arts Centre from Thursday 5 to Monday 9 November 2026.

All box office income from the screening will be donated to Maggie’s.
